Julio Le Parc

Bio

Argentine kinetic painter, draftsman and engraver, Julio Le Parc was born in Mendoza, Argentina in 1928. In 1942 he moved with his family to Buenos Aires, where he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1958, he obtained a scholarship to go to France, settling permanently in Paris. His work abandoned the traditional mediums of painting and, together with other European and American artists, he founded the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV) in 1960.

Statement

Le Parc is recognized worldwide for his contribution to kinetic and optical art. He is one of the greatest geometric and kinetic artists, making great innovations in the fields of light, movement and perception. His works function as a support for research on painting and its scope, sculpture and participatory experiences.
His work, composed mainly of reliefs that integrate light and movement, uses phosphorescent liquids, nylon threads and mechanically moved metal strips. Since 1969, after returning to painting on canvas, he has worked in a range of fourteen strictly defined colors.
