Antonio Paucar

Bio

Antonio Paucar was born in 1973 in Huancayo, Peru. He lives and works between Berlin (Germany) and Huancayo (Peru). He comes from a family of artisans. Since his childhood he worked as a craftsman making traditional Andean figures and masks. After completing his high school studies, he acquired professional training in beekeeping and worked for many years as a beekeeper in the central highlands of Peru. Later he traveled to Berlin, where he studied and graduated in Visual Arts at the Universität der Künste Berlin.

Statement

The core of Antonio Paucar’s work lies in his performances in which he creates a dense body of readings which are beyond language. He moves through private, public and political spaces and landscapes that are both culturally and symbolically laden. He waits for change, senses transience, the power of the unconscious, shows memories so as not to forget. In poetry they find a shared language of proximity, both transcending bodies and boundaries. Therein lies their vulnerability—and their strength.
