Luis Wells
Bio
Luis Wells was born in Buenos Aires in 1939, where twenty years later he founded the Informal Movement of Argentina. In 1965, he won the Di Tella prize with one of his "ceilings", and with a fellowship from the British Council. In 1966 he exhibited for the first time individually at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, and in 1967 he moved to New York. In 1969 he was a founding member of the Latin American Imaginary Museum in New York. A year later, he became interested in industrial design and won two awards for excellence. The model of one of his "ceilings" was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the original was donated to the National Museum of Buenos Aires. Back in his country, he began to paint on wood, obtaining the Konex prize (1982); prize from the National Academy of Fine Arts (1986); Grand Prize of Honor from the Valparaíso Biennial, Chile (1989); Torquist Award; Grand Prize of Honor from the National Painting Salon (1977), among others.
