Gonzalo Fuenmayor
Bio
Gonzalo Fuenmayor was born in Barranquilla (Colombia) in 1977. He works and lives in Miami. His work reflects the double cultural influence that has inexorably marked his artistic practice: Hispanic and North American. His childhood and youth took place in one of the cities that most appropriately embodies the essence of the Caribbean city and his professional activity has developed in the United States. Fuenmayor's work questions the notions of Caribbean identity as a brand and the stereotypes that this concept has generated through images that, by force of being repeated by advertising, have become local symbols such as bananas, toucans, pineapples and palm trees. In his dark backgrounds, intensely worked with charcoal, the artist represents that series of objects that transformed into "visual grafts" offer new readings and reflections on identity, the perception of the other and national culture in a globalized world.
Statement
Inaugurated at the end of 2001, the Fernando Pradilla Gallery aims to promote and disseminate contemporary art that takes place in Latin America and Spain, acting as a bridge of knowledge of artistic expressions from both continents.
Since its inception, the strategy has been based on the identification of artists, both emerging, mid-career and historical, and on the programming of individual and collective exhibitions in Madrid and other Latin American cities. The gallery participates in international art fairs in Latin America, Asia, Europe, and promotes the representation of its artists in biennials, awards, competitions, and exhibitions in national and international art centers.
