Javier Vivas

Bio

Javier Vivas studied graphic design and visual arts at the Universidad de Los Andes in Mérida, Venezuela. The design and structural study of geometry and its different components as revealing sources of meaning, are some of the elements that accompany a good part of his visual research, focused on the possibilities of graphics, drawing and fundamentally of the pictorial as strategies to unveil and expand new communicational spaces. In 2015 his work was recognized with the first prize in the IX Biennial of Visual Arts of the ULA, a period in which he also obtained a recognition as Outstanding Artist awarded by the Rector of the University of Los Andes and the distinction as Artist in Residence for the award. His work has been highlighted as a promising and novel articulation of the Venezuelan abstract-geometric tradition. In 2017 Vivas had his first solo exhibition at GBG Arts gallery, in Caracas, Venezuela.

Statement

The visual development of Javier Vivas' work is composed by the interpretation of universal images that derive from the collective unconscious and that are transformed into abstract structures that personify and interpret situations or entities that go beyond their usual context. In this way the development of his pictorial proposal is inscribed within the approach of archetypal images based on the theories proposed by Carl Jung where he tries to explore human behaviors and experiences that are expressed by the artist through a complex geometry that contains and protects that acquired information.
