Antonio Samudio

Bio

Antonio Samudio was born in Bogotá on March 18, 1932. Great painter and colourist, he has managed to master the use of color to remind us of the intimate and the everyday. Samudio has used his work –loaded with irony, humor and sarcasm– as a critical, biting and real tool to describe the political class, the clergy and our society, while with his erotic works he presents a unique look at the interplay between the characters. Juan Manuel Roca describes his work with great clarity: “There are few colorists in Colombia like Samudio. It is something that not everyone knows, for the simple reason that in a tropical and strident country it is almost always thought that color only has to do with the explosion, with excess, with carnivalesque combinations. Color in Samudio is muted. It is the color of someone who dips their brush in the mist, of someone who knows how to read behind its greyish curtains some hidden forms visited in the shadows”.
